The London Horseplay Centre

Barnet, Hertfordshire

Lessons, hacking and show jumping are available at this riding school, which is run as a member of the Association of British Riding Schools. Riders can book sessions for as little as GBP 20 per hour for children aged from four up to school age, making the centre a practical starting point for younger beginners. Older children and adults are also taught, and the school caters to complete novices as well as those progressing through the levels.

Teaching takes place in an outdoor menage equipped with a course of jumps, which gives riders a space to work on flatwork and practise show jumping in a controlled setting. Beyond the arena, hacking is a central part of what the school offers, with riders able to head out across 300 acres of parkland on West Common. Longer rides and trips further afield, including beach rides, are arranged from time to time, and pony experience days give children a short, structured introduction to ponies without committing to full lessons.

The setting on West Common gives the school a notably open backdrop for its lessons and hacks, and the programme is broad enough to suit riders who simply want a weekly session as well as those looking for more adventurous outings. Holiday camps run during school breaks, providing a way for children to spend time with ponies over a longer stretch rather than attending single lessons.

The centre operates from Tuesday to Sunday, with opening times governed by daylight hours, and is closed on Mondays. It is licensed by the local council. Further details on lesson availability, hacking routes and upcoming events can be obtained by contacting the school directly.
