Penshaw Equestrian Centre

Penshaw Equestrian Centre sits at the foot of Penshaw Monument in Washington, County Durham, and operates as a British Horse Society approved riding school. Lessons are available for riders of all abilities from the age of two and a half upwards, with a Tiny Tots session priced from GBP 28 that combines 15 minutes of grooming with 15 minutes in the saddle. The centre runs a structured Pony Academy alongside more informal pony weeks during school holidays, giving younger riders a way to build confidence and skills across several sessions rather than a single visit.

Adults and children can take regular lessons in dressage, show jumping, cross country, showing and hacking, with preparation offered for BHS examinations. Riders progress at their own pace, from complete beginners learning the basics through to more experienced combinations working on competition technique. The Changing Lives Through Horses programme is also delivered on site, using ponies and equine activities to support young people who may benefit from a different learning environment. Clinics and on-site shows run throughout the year, and birthday parties can be arranged for groups who want a hands-on, pony-themed celebration.

Facilities include both an indoor and an outdoor arena, a cross country course, secure tack room, stabling and storage bays, plus a viewing balcony overlooking the arenas. The setting at the foot of the monument provides direct access to hacking routes, making it straightforward to combine schooling with time out on country tracks. Lesson hours run Monday to Thursday from 1pm to 8.30pm, Friday from 1pm to 5.30pm, and weekends from 9am to 5.30pm.

Full livery is offered for owners who want their horse kept on site, and trailer hire is available for those needing to transport their own horse or pony. The centre is licensed by Sunderland City Council and is located at DH4 7LN. Anyone interested in booking lessons, arranging a party or enquiring about livery can contact the centre directly for current availability.
