Cholwell Riding School is a long-established, family-run equestrian centre based in Mary Tavy on the edge of Dartmoor. With more than fifty years of experience, the school provides a range of riding activities designed to suit riders of every ability, from complete beginners through to experienced horse riders. Children are welcome from the age of five upwards, making the centre a popular choice for families and younger riders taking their first steps in the saddle.
Lessons and hacking form the core of what is offered. Riding lessons are available for those who want to build their skills in the school, while escorted hacks and treks take riders out onto the open moorland under the guidance of experienced staff. Pony rides of around twenty minutes are available for younger riders, starting from GBP 15. The centre also caters for school and youth group bookings, hen and stag parties, and birthday parties, and gift vouchers and merchandise are sold on site.
The setting on the fringe of Dartmoor gives riders direct access to some of the most striking moorland scenery in the South West of England. All hacking routes are led by qualified escorts, which allows less experienced riders to enjoy longer rides out with confidence. The combination of structured tuition and guided outdoor riding means visitors can choose between arena-based work and time spent out on the trails.
Rides begin at 9.45am and run throughout the day, with phone bookings taken from 8am to 9pm.
