Rookin House Equestrian and Activity Centre

Rookin House Equestrian and Activity Centre sits in Troutbeck within the Lake District, combining a working riding school with a broader adventure venue. Riders can take lessons in dressage, show jumping and cross country, head out on accompanied hacking, or join pony treks across the surrounding Cumbrian countryside. The centre also runs group lessons, clinics, competitions and own-a-pony days, and welcomes riders on their own horses for hacking. Disciplines taught on site include stable management alongside the ridden work.

The centre caters for beginners through to more established riders, with dedicated provision for children and Pony Club members. Holiday camps and birthday parties are regular fixtures, and pony rides are available for younger visitors. Riders can work towards Pony Club centre tests and badges as Rookin House holds Pony Club Riding Centre status, giving younger members a structured pathway. Adults and groups are equally well served through private accompanied rides, corporate events and educational visits.

Beyond the stables, the site functions as an activity centre offering quad biking, archery and clay shooting, and there is a bar called The Loft. Self-catering accommodation is available on site, and the venue also hosts weddings. The setting places riders within easy reach of Ullswater and the northern fells, with bridleways leading directly from the property.

Rookin House is accredited by the Association of British Riding Schools and holds Pony Club Riding Centre status. Group lessons for up to three riders start from GBP 28 for a half hour session. The Activity Centre is open seven days a week by appointment, with summer office hours running Monday to Sunday 09:00 to 17:00 and winter hours on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 09:00 to 17:00. The office is closed on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays in winter, and the centre shuts from 24 to 30 December and on 1 January. The postcode is CA11 0SS.
