Fort Widley Equestrian Centre in Portsmouth runs horse riding lessons for riders of all ages and stages, from complete beginners through to more experienced riders. Tuition is delivered by British Horse Society qualified instructors in private, semi-private and group formats, with dedicated Tiny Tots sessions aimed at children aged two to four. Children can also progress through the centre's Pony Club and Saddle Club activities, and adults are welcome to book lessons throughout the week.
The centre is a member of the Riding for the Disabled Association and runs regular RDA sessions, making the facilities accessible to riders with additional needs. Stable management forms part of the lesson programme, teaching practical skills alongside riding. Other services include pony parties, own-a-pony days, school residentials and walk outs, giving younger riders the chance to spend extended time with the horses on site.
Lessons are taught on a parade ground and the centre also has mechanical horses, which are used as a teaching aid. Hacking is offered as part of the riding experience, taking advantage of the rural setting on the slopes of Portsdown Hill overlooking Portsmouth Harbour. The site's historic fort location gives the centre a quiet, open atmosphere within easy reach of the city.
Reception is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4pm. Lessons run Tuesday to Friday from 9.30am to 8pm and at weekends from 9am to 4pm; the centre is closed on Mondays. Tiny Tots individual private half-hour lessons start from GBP 20. Fort Widley Equestrian Centre sits within the Fort Widley site in Hampshire, postcode PO6 3LS. The centre is listed on the British Horse Society approved register.
