Buxton Riding School operates on the edge of the Peak District and has built a long-standing reputation for teaching riders in and around the Derbyshire market town of Buxton. The school runs group lessons, semi-private lessons and private lessons across the disciplines of dressage, show jumping, eventing, working hunter and hacking. Riders of all ages are catered for, including complete beginners and children, with horses and ponies available to hire for lessons so that pupils do not need their own horse to take part.
Pony days form a core part of the programme, with the Own a Pony for a Day experience and the Pony Stars scheme giving younger riders an extended introduction to stable management and riding. School holiday pony camps provide further structured time at the yard. Lessons for beginners start on the flat before progressing to jumping work and the open countryside that surrounds the school. Assessment lessons are offered for new riders, and the school runs farm rides that take groups out across the surrounding landscape.
The facilities include both an indoor arena and an outdoor arena, allowing lessons to continue through poor weather. Hat and body protector hire is available, and the outdoor and indoor arenas can be hired separately from the lesson programme. The school is a member of Riding for the Disabled, hosting RDA sessions through the Helen Atkin Riding for the Disabled Group, and the premises are accessible to riders with additional needs.
Buxton Riding School holds a local-authority riding establishment licence issued by High Peak Borough Council under licence number HPK/RE0001. The postcode is SK17 9NH. From 27 March 2026 the school has announced that its riding school lessons will close, while Riding for the Disabled sessions and arena hire will continue to operate. Prices start from GBP 15 for a twenty-minute Give It A Go Ride Out during school holidays, which includes a hat and body protector. Contact details and the latest timetable are available directly from the school.
