Black Bears Polo Club

Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire

Black Bears Polo Club operates as a private polo club set within the Oxfordshire countryside near Henley-on-Thames. The grounds sit at Lower Bolney Farm in Shiplake, addressing RG9 3NN, with direct access from the surrounding lanes and quick links back towards Reading and the M4 corridor. The site covers around 120 acres of turnout, giving horses space to move alongside the working areas of the yard.

Five polo pitches form the centre of the club's sporting offer, supported by a 96m by 56m arena finished with a Martin Collins surface. Players and visiting teams can book member chukkas, enter organised polo tournaments, or take part in pro-am challenges throughout the season. Young horse training is offered for owners working through the early stages of a polo pony's career, with on-site staff providing continuity between schooling, turnout and competition play.

Stabling is one of the club's standout resources, with 98 brick and flint stables arranged around the yard. Three horse walkers, a canter track, a walk track and a mile-long exercise track provide varied ways to condition horses away from the polo pitches. A feed store, dedicated muck heaps, an office, the polo manager's house and residential staff flats keep the daily operation running on site, while a farmhouse offers accommodation for visiting players or owners who want to stay close to their string.

The club's polo programme runs across the South East of England and draws members from Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and London. Anyone interested in joining, bringing a string of ponies, or entering a tournament should contact the polo office at Lower Bolney Farm, Shiplake, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire RG9 3NN to discuss membership, livery arrangements and the fixture calendar. The yard is set up for serious polo players and polo pony owners rather than riding lessons, so enquiries from riders without polo experience are best directed elsewhere.
